They said this.

And then he said this.

Suddenly, out of the blue, he said this.

I guess that's that.

Now who says the law is boring? :p

P.S.
Tame your tongue and do not let it control you. The purity of your heart's intention cannot justify the words you have spoken ----> Words to live by.

I think I'm in the wrong profession. I want her job.

But in fairness to my current employment, I do have travel opportunities here too. When I pass the Bar, I can go to Antipolo, Tagaytay, Imus Cavite and if the need arises, Cagayan de Oro.

Yahoo. Gotta get my passport ready.

Aside from "power-hungry", today's other word for the day is "unconscionable".

Thankfully, the two words have nothing to do with each other. At least for today's adventures.

I was so mistaken when I thought this morning that this was going to be another uninteresting day :p
From Sir Te's blog

Ingratitude. In Gratitude.

Note: Not for the faint of heart, this contains strong language.

After 30 or so years of service, many people retire with gold watches, a plaque, honor and acclaim of peers; the luckier ones retire with a hefty check.

Salvador T. Carlota, Dean of Malcolm Hall from 2005 and Professor of Law, will retire on his birthday this December not with a gold watch, not with a plaque, not with a hefty check but with a heart broken by betrayal and ingratitude.

A few days back, the following members of the Law Faculty posted publicly a statement demanding that Dean Carlota not be allowed any extension of his term beyond his birthday--

Harry Roque
Florin Hilbay
Elizabeth Pangalangan
Raul Pangalangan
Merlin Magallona
Bartolome Carale
Domingo Disini
JJ Disini
Barry Gutierrez
Danilo Concepcion

Never mind that two of these are retired former deans who should know how it is to cap one’s service to the University and the College enjoying the gratitude of peers and colleagues.

Never mind that one of them is a former Dean who, on the first day of Dean Carlota’s term in 2005, assured the Dean that he would not object to a full term of three years for him, even beyond his birthday (a statement that this former Dean has denied, of course).

Never mind that one of them is a recently retired professor who practically begged for an extension so that he could hold on to his administrative post, and which Dean Carlota graciously granted and even expedited—no questions asked.

Never mind that another is a recently retired professor who also had his term extended by Dean Carlota--no questions asked either.

Never mind that the others are absentee directors who spend more time outside the University and their institutes than inside.

Never mind that not one of them can give a perfectly reasonable, let alone compelling, explanation why Dean Carlota has to leave as soon as he turns 65 and not stay one day longer.

Never mind that not one of them can give a perfectly reasonable answer to the equally reasonable question--"why the rush?"

Never mind that after more than 30 years of service to the U.P. and the College of Law, Dean Carlota simply was asking, at the minimum, to for five (5) more months!

Mind only that they want him out the minute he turns 65.

Mind only that they wanted to make him a lame duck, as soon as possible, and to make him one in public, posting their signatures attached to huge statements—printed at college expense, at that.

After 30 plus years of faithful service, this man is met not in gratitude but with ingratitude.

Paraphrasing the Bard, surely now breaks a noble heart. A few days ago, I witnessed something totally uncharacteristic of Dean Carlota—he expressed, in no uncertain terms and tone, his disgust at his colleages. “If there is one thing good that has come out of this,” he said, “it is that I now know the true character of some of my colleagues. All I want is five more months, and they cannot even give me that!”

It is strong language coming from him, who is unfailingly civil, consistently cordial, deliberately inclusive, characteristically polite—yet, under the circumstances, I am not surprised; I am surprised only that he did not use stronger language, I would have—but that shows simply that he is a better man than I am.

After 30 plus years of continuous service, his colleagues, many of whom he taught, cannot give this man five more months!

Etched in granite at the lobby of Malcolm Hall, the U.P. College of Law proudly proclaims that we teach law in the grand manner.

I would like to think that I teach law in the grand manner because I teach law students, first, to become good persons. One cannot become a great lawyer unless one is a good person first.

Certainly, modeling ingratitude cannot be part of teaching law in the grand manner. Butif it is, then perhaps it really is time to really tear down that wall with those words etched in granite because then teaching law in the grand manner--in this way--would be one big, cruel farce.

***********

I wonder how these people can still sleep at night.

I actually feel betrayed too because I looked up to these people during my entire stay in the college and even after. But not anymore.

I guess vested interests are more than enough to trample upon one of the best professors that the college will ever have. Unlike those people who unabashedly touted their academic achievements, Dean Carlota knew the law inside out AND led by example. You want to know how a public servant is supposed to conduct himself? Forget your mnemonics, just look at Dean Carlota and you'll get your answer in a flash.

Thank you Sir for giving the college the best years of your life. Some of your colleagues may not appreciate everything you've done for us but rest assured that they are merely the minority. From the rest of us who still believe in gratitude and innate human goodness, thank you DEAN Carlota.

Mabuhay po kayo.

I finally have something to look forward to again!

The last time I religiously watched something was when Buffy was still showing on Studio 23 but then I had to move to the dorm which had no tv, so adios vampire slayer.

But for some reason, the new season of Amazing Race Asia really caught my fancy so I guess I'll be staying in every Thursday night for the next few months :)

Team Japan is my favorite because they're soooo adorable! They're a brother and sister team and they look so cute. Of course, cute and adorable probably won't cut it in the race but...but... I don't care, go Team Japan!

Sawaka and Daichi

Philippine-bias aside, I really think that Marc and Rovilson are the team to beat. They're super competitive and seem to be the most physically fit among the teams (together with Team Singapore). But luck plays a big part too in the competition so let's just see how the race progresses. As the two aptly put it: You live and die by your taxi driver.

Speaking of taxi drivers, Team Singapore really hit a snag when they flagged down an FX thinking it was a taxi! It was such a hoot when the Coastal Mall was shown in the background when they were supposed to be on their way to Fort Santiago! Talk about supremely lost :p

Buti pa sila Marc and Rovilson, when they couldn't find a taxi, they took a jeep and then a pedicab to Fort Santiago. Now that's what's known as a homecourt advantage. But sadly, they only got in 2nd at the pitstop, Pam and Van beat them to the top spot.

Pam and Van are so fun and game! Unlike Monica who made Edwin carry both their backpacks and kept on complaining when they were still in Singapore. Unless she undergoes a severe attitude change ASAP, I don't see how they'll make it first in the next leg of the race and avoid the thirty-minute penalty.

Wala na, I've been sucked into the Amazing Race Asia world :p

Can't wait for the next episode :)

Today I tagged along with Atty. Vic for her client meeting in Fort Bonifacio. Can I just say that I was totally giddy to be outside because for the past three weeks I've been cooped inside the office and the only way I could experience the outside world was by peering through the blinds.

Then we had lunch at Italiannis. Thank you to their Php500 GC and our Php100 each daily lunch allowance for subsidizing our fantabulous meal.

Afterwards, we went back to the office and actually got some work done. Seriously.

Then I went home by 5:45pm, walked to the BF entrance, lined up at the tricycle terminal and waited for my chariot to arrive. Once I got home, I walked the dog.

And then I went to Contis for my dinner date with Liway.

Italiannis and Contis in one day, it just doesn't get any better than this :)

I think I have blogger's block. Blame it on doing the same thing over and over every single day. Sucks the soul dry.

I actually enjoyed it at the start because the first task given to me was like one big puzzle that I had to unravel and solve. But the past two days have been blech. I think I'm just irked at one particular person hence the bad mood.

Anyway, because of said person we can expect a good tongue-lashing in the next few days :p

Pero ano ba, no means no nga eh! Unless I suddenly develop the powers of extracting water from a rock, I have no idea how we can make this work.

What's better, Facebook or Friendster?

I just signed up for Facebook and it has all these features that kinda left me light-headed :p

On the other hand, I haven't logged in to my Friendster account in months so I really wouldn't know if they've beefed up their ranks.

So which is it?

There's nothing I'd like better than to just live safely ensconced within my bubble. Inside my bubble, only matters of consequence to me reign supreme. So there's my family, my online babies, my friends and now my job. But outside my warm and cozy bubble, things are not quite in order. And yet I continue to look the other way because it's just so darn warm and comfortable in my bubbly existence while the outside world is chaotic and full of evil people.

But though I try, it's no longer as easy to shut out the world outside. Because I know that doing so and remaining apathetic to it all makes me equally guilty as those who do the actual plundering and looting.

Good people must do something, if only to let the other good people know.

Dear Fellow Filipinos,

Good day to you!

Last October 13 , Governor Ed Panlilio of Pampanga came out to declare that he was given P 500,000.00 in cash which came from a Palace Staff Member in Malacañang. The money was allegedly given for baranggay projects and to support candidates for the upcoming baranggay elections. Since Gov. Panlilio's admission, there have been other local officials and congressmen who have admitted to receiving money from Malacañang as well. Up until today we still don't know where this money really came from.

But since then, Gov. Panlilio has been under fire because of doing the right thing. Right now, local officials in Pampanga led by Vice-Gov. Yeng Guiao are ganging up on him and marginalizing him by not respecting his authority as governor. Media Publications in Pampanga are even being used to destroy his credibility. If one looks at Gov. Panlilio's performance thus far in the less than 6 months that he has been in office, the results would speak for itself. He was able to raise the same amount of quarry taxes in less than 2 months compared to the former governor who raised the same amount in 1 year. Due to this, mayors and board members are now demanding part of this collection money and are blackmailing Gov. Panlilio by not passing important policies that will benefit the constituencies of Pampanga.

Isn't this a familiar refrain in our country? Someone does good and yet he is often punished for doing what is right? And worse, while this is happening many of us just turn a blind eye without doing anything. We just shrug it off and move on with our lives. It is no wonder why majority of our government leaders are becoming bolder and bolder in becoming corrupt since for them no one would dare complaint about it. In short, we deserve the kind of leaders that we have because we continue to do nothing despite the fact that we see that there is something wrong. And this is why I am writing to appeal to you right now, I'd like to ask for a few minutes of your time to send an email of support to Gov. Ed Panlilio, let us all tell him that we are behind him in his quest for the Truth. What is at stake here is not only the people of Pampanga but the nation as a whole. Gov. Ed exposed what has long been happening in Malacañang and now he is being punished for it. Will you do something about it?

If yes, then please send an email of support to Gov. Ed Panlilio at wesupportgovpanlilio@gmail.com and please help us by forwarding this email to all your friends. We will print the emails that you send and give it to Gov. Panlilio to show him that he is not alone in his quest for the Truth. Let us show the world that the Filipino people will not just allow another Good Man to fail and let evil prevail.

Thank you for your time! May you have a pleasant day!

Sincerely,

Harvey S. Keh

Here are the reasons why I know I'm not with the UP-Office of Legal Aid anymore:

1. I have my own computer. No more waiting in line for a computer to free up. And the printer here actually works! Unlike in UP-OLA, there is no magical toner here that needs to be transferred from one printer to another just to print out pleadings or motions:p

2. It's quiet. There are no incessantly ringing phones or giggling interns (or giggling for that matter) to be heard here. Just a steady clicking sound from the keyboard in the next cubicle as well as the boss calling out to the secretary every now and then.

3. The documents I've been tasked to study talk of hundreds of millions of pesos. When all of your past clients have been primarily indigents, anything above Php50,000 is already a fortune.

4. The document files are super-organized. Unlike in OLA where the state of the file folders will depend on the degree of OC-ness of the intern before you. They actually have a table of contents and the pleadings/motions/orders are tabbed for easy access! Amazing.

But like OLA:

1. They also love to pig out here. Birthdays are remembered with perfect accuracy to ensure a lunch blow-out.

2. There are "supervising lawyers" (a.k.a the big bosses) on hand to bother ask whenever a question arises.

I'll be tagging along to the Makati RTC on Thursday and we'll be meeting with Sir Te! Thankfully, we're on the same side (obviously the right side hehehehe) so yey :) Maybe I can make beso him because we're practically colleagues na :p

The week in recap:

Nov. 1- Tessa's daughter, Robyn was born.
Nov. 2- Baby Robyn underwent several tests to determine the next step regarding her condition.
-We watched "30 Days of Night" and "Balls of Fury" in Town. The first movie didn't add anything new to the vampire genre so it was so-so in that sense. But it's a B-movie feast so those who like blood and gore, as well as being startled by loud music and gruesome scenes will definitely lap this up. The second movie was pure slapstick and had funny moments (particularly those with Christopher Walken) but the emaciated Maggie Q was kinda difficult to watch.
Nov. 3- Baby Robyn underwent an operation with the second one to happen in six months time.
- I finally finished my waterloo level in Theme Hospital. Two more to go! Woohoo! :p
Nov. 4- Tita Julie's funeral.
Nov. 5- First day of work :)
